D.H. Melhem

We regret to announce the death of D.H.Melhem, June 15, in Long Beach, Califormia. DH was deeply committed to the IWWG and served as a founding Board member and Vice-President for more than 30 years. We are grateful for all that she brought to us. A friend just wrote, “D.H. sparkled.” That is how we remember her.

D.H. published seven books of poetry, a fiction trilogy, short stories, essays and two books of criticism on the African-American poet, Gwendolyn Brooks. She received a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and an American Book Award. She loved the Upper West Side of Manhattan where she lived from 1950 until her move to California in 2012. “She is a poet of the city, poet of the heart, poet of the land.” Cynthia Ozick

A memorial service is planned for later this year in New York City. Her news and notes are on her website, along with the titles, descriptions, and reviews of her books: www.dhmelhem.com
